Why Working Out When Sick Is a BAD Idea

OK this is going back about 15 to 18 years ago. I had just gotten over my depression and was spending hours upon hours in the gym. 4 to 6 times per week twice a day! That’s a lot of time!

Needless to say I was looking pretty good because I had just learnt my 3 Pillars of Fitness and I was applying them to its FULLEST!

Everything was going great. Up until I caught a cold…

That was the time I learnt an extremely valuable lesson:

You should NEVER, EVER workout when you are cold or getting over a cold….EVER!!!!

Up until this point I had spent almost free waking hour that I had in the gym, supplementing, resting, and eating the right way and getting sick stopped me from getting the results I wanted. So, once I started to feel better I got my butt back in the gym and I started working out once again.

It literally took me one (1) day back. I had a great workout, I pushed myself, I broke into a sweat, and I thought (just like all these so called pros said) I’m going accelerate this cold to the max…

BOY WAS I WRONG!!!!

The next day I woke up and I felt like I was dying, I couldn’t get out of bed, the cold came back with such a vengeance that I couldn’t move for that day. It took me another week to recover from this “second wave” and all I could do was research.

I came across this article (long gone by now) that it said that working out while sick or getting over colds may be a bad idea as it may trigger the central nervous system into a series to repair the muscles instead of fighting off the virus. This completely made sense to me and the further I went into this the more it made sense. Like, allowing your body to naturally heal itself before you hit the gym, using tactics (like cold water dousing, and proper supplementation) to fortify your system (body) to either give it the tools to fight, or fortify it to resist the flu.

Over the next few weeks I am going to go into further detail into these tactics so you can implement them into your day-to-day life. Some may not be fun but the payoff will be well worth it.

Ever since then, I think I have been sick only once per year over the past 15 years (and I’m talking about over the past 3 years).
